The one-stop solution for New Jersey’s literacy mandates

New Jersey now requires universal literacy screening and parent notifications. To meet these mandates, NJDOE’s Student Literacy Working Group fully recommends mCLASS DIBELS 8th Edition as the trusted solution to help schools.

Some of the requirements of the New Jersey Department of Education’s Senate Bill 2644 include:

  • Mandatory screenings: Schools must conduct literacy screenings for all K–3 students at least twice annually to assess reading proficiency levels.
  • Parental notification: Within 30 days of the screening period’s end, schools are required to inform parents or guardians of the results, including comparisons to grade-level norms and available intervention supports.

mCLASS offers New Jersey all of the following, plus many more additional features to support students and teachers:

  • Universal screening
  • Dyslexia screening
  • Instant data analysis and reporting
  • Parental notification letter

New research brief: K–2 early literacy improvements offer hope, but persistent challenges remain.

Amplify’s research brief on the latest K–2 middle-of-school-year literacy data reveals encouraging gains in early reading, particularly among the nation’s youngest students. This year’s kindergarten cohort has returned to pre-pandemic literacy readiness levels. But overall progress remains slow: Only 56% of students are on track for learning to read, and 29% of students are far behind.

Middle-of-year data can help schools plan for instructional changes and implement those changes before the following school year. See the report’s recommendations for actions schools and districts can take now.

How many students are on track to learn to read?

While all grades across K–2 show signs of year-over-year progress, with more students on-track for learning to read than there were in 2023–24, broader literacy gains remain slow, with a little more than half of students across early grades (K–2) on track for core reading instruction.

How many students are at risk for not learning to read?

All grades across K–2 show the percentage of students at the greatest risk for not learning to read decreasing year-over-year. While fewer students are considered far behind today than in 2023–24, more than a quarter of students across grades K–2 are at the greatest risk for not learning to read.

Diverse text

Amplify CKLA puts a variety of texts in the hands of students every day to build and strengthen background knowledge and vocabulary, listening and reading comprehension, and decoding and fluency skills.

More than that, we ensure the texts students read represent the world around them. With a diverse range of authors, topics, and characters, all students have ample access to both windows and mirrors. Our texts include:

  • authentic books.
  • authentic text passages.
  • student readers.
  • novel guides (grades 3–5).

Aligned to LETRS and Orton Gillingham

Amplify CKLA aligns with the instructional principles recommended by Orton Gillingham and LETRS.

  • Structured–Concepts are taught through consistent routines
  • Sequential–Concepts are taught in a logical, well-planned sequence
  • Systematic–Phonemes are taught from simplest to most complex
  • Explicit–Decoding and encoding concepts are taught directly and explicitly
  • Multi-sensory–Instruction is delivered through visual, auditory, and kinesthetic-tactile pathways
  • Cumulative–Concepts are applied in decodable, connected texts with constant review and reinforcement

Universal access

We believe we have a responsibility to provide literacy instruction that gives every student the same opportunity to succeed and excel.

We know that early reading affects achievement throughout school and beyond—well into college and career. Yet most literacy programs continue to fall short of supporting early literacy success. That’s why we’re so proud that CKLA is helping close the reading gap between students within diverse communities.

Complete curriculum

A strong literacy program is not just about a reading program or an assessment tool: it brings together curriculum, instruction, regular practice, intervention, and assessments.

Amplify has brought these components together in our early literacy suite of curriculum, ensure that you have what you need for multi-tiered support.

Science of Reading Resources

Watching students learn to read: magic. Knowing how they get there: science.

As you consider your next core ELA program, it’s critically important to understand what the Science of Reading really means and what it tells us about how to teach more effectively. Unlike other programs, Amplify CKLA was built upon these insights and practices, making it easier for teachers to implement this proven approach.

How does it work?

Amplify ELA provides everything you need to deliver a full year’s worth of high-quality instruction.

Looking for a more flexible version of the curriculum? Check out our abridged lesson pathways ensure full coverage of the standards in just 100 days.

What do students explore?

Each grade level of Amplify ELA consists of six multimedia units. Four or five of the units are focused on complex literary texts and one or two are collections based on primary source documents and research. Each grade also provides two or three immersive learning experiences called Quests, a dedicated story writing unit, and a poetry unit.

students collaborating and using laptops

How does it engage all students?

Watching students mature into adolescents: inspiring. Knowing how to engage and motivate their changing brains: science.

The middle-school years are marked by a period of tremendous growth and change for students—physically, emotionally, and socially. Amplify ELA understands and embraces these changes, and delivers instruction specifically designed to tap into adolescents’ natural inclinations toward collaboration, exploration, and autonomy.

Differentiation

Amplify believes all students are capable of reading grade-level text together.

Amplify ELA ensures all students have access to the same text. With six distinct levels of differentiation, your student is supported or challenged in a way that meets their unique needs. This includes ELLs at the Developing, Expanding, and Bridging levels, as well as students needing substantial support or an extra challenge.

Differentiation

Assessment

In Amplify ELA, all units include a robust system of embedded assessment that provides teachers with actionable student performance data long before end-of-unit or benchmark exams. Data’s essential role in your Science of Reading implementation

Support teachers and students in working toward literacy goals by leading with data as you shift to the Science of Reading. With tools like ongoing progress monitoring and a robust Multi-Tiered System of Supports, we’ll show you how data can give your students the literacy instruction they deserve.

Building buy-in for change—with data

You can use literacy data to harness buy-in for a paradigm shift, monitor student progress, and support your transition to the Science of Reading. But which data measures best identify areas for growth and reveal the path to student achievement?

Our free ebook, The Story That Data Tells, will help you take the first steps in using data to guide your journey toward impactful change..

“I had to dig into and learn: What is [the Science of Reading] all about? How are we gonna be using this data instructionally, and then take that data and use it with our kids? So that’s really how we got the ball rolling.”

—Corey Beil, Interventionist and Instructional Coach

Quaker Community School District, Pennsylvania

Getting started with a data-driven literacy implementation

As any experienced educator can agree, change is not straightforward in the classroom. This is especially true when it comes to shifting to the Science of Reading, a process that requires meticulous planning, open communication, and—most importantly—data.

Discover which data to focus on throughout the school year, and how to use it to direct your implementation—whether you’re just starting the shift, or already implementing the Science of Reading.

Align your MTSS to the Science of Reading

Learn more about MTSS in literacy principles and how to align it with the Science of Reading.

The five guiding principles for an effective MTSS

To provide your students with literacy instruction that meets their needs, you need seamless planning and plenty of forethought. Deliver the instruction, assessment, and personalized learning your students deserve with a Multi-Tiered System of Supports grounded in data and the Science of Reading.

Read about the five guiding principles that can help you align your MTSS with the Science of Reading in our free ebook Systems of Success: Getting Started With a Multi-Tiered System of Supports Aligned to the Science of Reading.

Review the five guiding principles

An effective MTSS framework requires collaboration from all stakeholders (such as teachers, administrators, and caregivers) to ensure students have access to the right instructional support at the right time.

Frequent collection and interpretation of high-quality data is essential to identifying student needs, monitoring progress, and guiding decision-making. Universal screening and progress monitoring data are used to evaluate the effectiveness of all tiers in an MTSS, and to identify students at risk.

An MTSS provides increasing levels of support for students when they need it. It also focuses on prevention first to reduce the need for intervention later.

Implementing evidence-based instruction and interventions with fidelity improves outcomes for all students. A focus on all students, not just those in need of additional support, ensures that all students can access high-quality instruction.

In an MTSS framework, decisions are based on research and the constantly evolving needs of all students and schools.

Unlock possibility with the Science of Writing

The reality is…writing is hard. It’s hard to learn, it’s hard to teach, it’s hard to do.

Natalie Wexler, author of The Knowledge Gap and The Writing Revolution, says, “Writing is the hardest thing we ask students to do.” Fortunately, we have decades of research that shows us how best to teach and learn how to write, known as the Science of Writing. As an educator your job is to make this hard task easier and more fulfilling for students. And our job is to help you.

Why writing matters: Connection, expression, and better reading comprehension

Without writing, there would be no need for reading, and of course, writing is a part of literacy.

Through writing, students can express their ideas, connect with others, and deepen and communicate their understanding of what they are reading and thinking.

Having strong writing skills ensures students can engage fully in all settings, share their opinions and information, tell stories, and have a voice.

What is the Science of Writing?

Learning to write (and read) isn’t natural but it can be taught—and research shows us how. Like the Science of Reading, the Science of Writing is the collection of research and evidence-based practices that explains how writing develops along with the teaching strategies that help students develop into skilled writers.

Writing proficiency involves mastering the use of a complex set of skills that must be taught explicitly, again just like reading proficiency. The Simple View of Writing breaks down these processes into transcription and composition, and provides us with a framework for guiding instruction.

The relationship between reading and writing

Reading and writing reinforce and support each other. When reading, students are exposed to vocabulary, grammar, and syntax. And when writing, students can get more practice to improve the fluency and efficiency of their handwriting, and apply their knowledge of spelling and their understanding of vocabulary, grammar, and syntax.

Readers use comprehension skills such as summarizing, predicting, and making inferences to help them create meaning as they read. Writers use those same skills to develop a piece of writing that is clear and concise for the reader.

The benefits of applying reading skills and strategies when writing

  • If you teach students decoding skills, then they become better spellers.
  • If students learn strategies for planning, drafting, and revising during composition, then their reading comprehension improves.
  • If students have word and vocabulary knowledge, then they’re better at expressing their ideas in writing.
“Steve Graham and Michael Hebert (2010) carried out a meta-analysis of more than 100 studies in which students wrote about text. They found that writing in various ways about what one had read improved comprehension and learning, and it did so better than reading alone, reading and rereading, or reading and discussing.”

—Tim Shanahan, Ph.D.

Distinguished Professor Emeritus, University of Illinois at Chicago (UIC); Literacy researcher and writer

Oral language and writing

Oral language is the foundation for literacy, and its development begins in infancy. As their oral language develops, children learn how to string words into phrases and sentences, which progresses into telling stories and answering questions in detail. And as they listen to stories, children develop vocabulary and understanding of syntax and grammar. All of these build a foundation for writing.

Rich topics

Amplify CKLA builds knowledge coherently across subjects and grades.

Students make connections from year to year by exploring grade-appropriate subject-area knowledge and vocabulary in history, science, literature, and the arts, while learning to read, write, and think creatively and for themselves.

Science of Reading resources

Watching students learn to read? Magic. Knowing how they get there? Science.

As you consider your next core ELA program, it’s critically important to understand what the Science of Reading really means—and what it tells us what it tells us about how to teach more effectively. Unlike other programs, Amplify CKLA was built upon these insights and practices, making it easier for teachers to implement this proven approach.

What is ELA?

Amplify ELA is a core program for Grades 6–8 that delivers:

  • A unique, research-based approach designed to get all students reading grade-level text together.
  • An instructional design that inspires students to read more deeply, write more vividly, and think more critically.
  • A rich combination of dynamic texts, lively discussions, and interactive Quests that truly engages middle schoolers and inspires them to participate in learning.

How ELA works

Amplify ELA lessons follow a structure that’s grounded in regular routines, yet flexible enough to allow for a variety of learning experiences. You can find more information in our ELA Program Guide.

What students explore

Amplify ELA provides everything you need to deliver a full year’s worth of instruction.

Each grade level of Amplify ELA consists of six multimedia units. Four or five of the units are focused on complex literary texts and one or two are collections based on primary source documents and research. Each grade also provides a dedicated story-writing unit, a poetry unit, and two or three immersive learning experiences called Quests.

Science of Reading

Watching students mature into adolescents? Inspiring. Knowing how to engage and motivate their changing brains? Science.

The middle school years are marked by a period of tremendous growth and change—physically, emotionally, and socially. Amplify ELA understands and embraces these changes, and delivers instruction specifically designed to tap into adolescents’ natural inclinations toward collaboration, exploration, and autonomy.

Differentiation

We believe all students are capable of reading grade-level text together.

Amplify ELA ensures all students have access to the same text. With six distinct levels of differentiation, every student is supported or challenged in a way that meets their unique needs. This includes English learners at the Developing, Expanding, and Bridging levels, as well as students needing substantial support or an extra challenge.

Assessment

Amplify ELA not only includes captivating content, but also provides clear and actionable measurement data about student performance.

Our embedded formative and summative assessment tools maximize teaching time, while allowing teachers to make confident, data-driven decisions about the instruction and support students need to grow continually as readers and writers.

Welcome, Florida middle school educators!

Amplify ELA Florida is the program built for Florida middle school teachers and students. We designed the program to help ensure the B.E.S.T standards are covered; the skills are taught; the test is prepped for; and your students are scaffolded and encouraged. We want you to spend your time bringing the text to life, making the classroom hum, and letting every student know you are paying attention to their growth.

Amplify ELA Florida Program Guide

Instruction matters

Florida’s new standards have been crafted to give your students the B.E.S.T. Amplify ELA Florida’s lessons explore the most compelling aspect of a text and target the standards that best support that analysis through reading, writing, and communication. These key standards are identified as the lesson’s Spotlight benchmark.  Strategic connections are attained in the program through:

  • Florida model texts including rich literature and compelling non-fiction, taught in engaging new ways for today’s learners.
  • Benchmark stacks that build connections within lessons and across units.
  • Writing that builds directly from reading complex text and is evaluated by Amplify’s Automated Writing Evaluation (AWE).
  • Reading with the B.E.S.T. Modules have been built to guide teachers and students as they begin to work with Florida’s new reading standards, providing an introduction to each grade-level B.E.S.T. Reading Benchmark.
(Example module: Grade 6, Understanding Rhetoric)

Knowledge matters

Texts in the Amplify ELA Florida Edition curriculum cover a wide range of topics, themes, and genres with differentiated supports that ensure that all students can work through each reading and lesson. Taken as a whole, the texts show students a diverse picture of the world and help foster a lifelong love of reading. Comprehension develops as students engage with literary and informational text selections that are complex, rich, and meaningful.

Texts were selected for Amplify ELA Florida Edition using the following criteria:

  • Text complexity as defined by qualitative, quantitative, and reader and task measurements as required by the B.E.S.T. Standards and the Amplify Text Complexity Index
  • Balance of literary and informational texts
  • Varied representation of genres: novels, plays, poetry, biographies, and other full-length texts
  • Diverse cultures, perspectives, and authors
  • Engaging texts that extend learning and support students as they build knowledge
  • Grade-appropriate texts, with scaffolding and compelling activities to support student engagement with 100% authentic texts
  • A library with more than 700 complete books, both classic and contemporary, encompassing a wide range of genres, topics, and cultural perspectives

Curriculum matters

Amplify ELA Florida is a blended curriculum designed specifically for grades 6–8. The heart of every lesson is the text. Each grade includes six units centered on literary or informational texts, delivered in several forms of media. Your classroom will also benefit from two or three immersive, project-based experiences and a dedicated Story Writing unit.

  • Full B.E.S.T. coverage: Standards are clearly labeled in each lesson, so teachers can save time planning and get back to what they love: teaching. Also included are Benchmark Modules that support teachers’ and students’ introduction to the new standards for Florida.
  • Five levels of differentiation: Based on each student’s needs and the performance measures within Amplify ELA reports, a teacher can choose the differentiation level that’s the right fit for everyone.
  • Embedded Assessments: Teachers benefit from uninterrupted instructional time and a continuously updated picture of each student’s progress with key skills and standards.
  • Powerful feedback tools: Comprehensive tools help teachers maximize both the quantity and quality of feedback.
  • Robust reporting: Our reporting app offers information on student progress to help inform instructional decisions.

All in one place: Embedded teacher support, differentiation tools, student data, text, and other curriculum features—they’re all right there.

Amplify ELA is the ELA program designed for middle school. It offers rich texts that are a delight to teach, better connections with your students through powerful differentiation and assessment tools, and step-by-step instructional guides that save you time and simplify your day.

Explore more research behind the program

We empower students to become critical thinkers.

With text always at the center, students are encouraged to make ideas and opinions about meaning for themselves. Rather than focusing on right or wrong answers, they develop ideas and opinions on relevant, real-world, texts.

We provide six levels of differentiation.

Multiple entry points and differentiated supports allow every student, regardless of fluency or ability level, to engage deeply with the same complex texts and rigorous curriculum.

We assess while you instruct.

Embedded assessments and reports provide insight into each student’s progress without having to interrupt daily instruction. With data being collected at every learning moment, teachers can respond to student needs faster than ever before.

Our approach

Each unit of Amplify Science engages all learners in a relevant, real-world problem where they assume the role of a scientist to investigate scientific phenomena, engage in collaboration and discussion, and develop models or explanations to arrive at solutions.

A research-backed approach to 3D learning

The research-based Do, Talk, Read, Write, Visualize instructional approach—developed by UC Berkeley’s Lawrence Hall of Science—provides students with multiple opportunities and modalities with which to access science instruction. Independent research proves that this model of learning benefits all learners, and our efficacy research shows improved student achievement.

Explore our research

Students take on roles of scientists and engineers.

In each unit, students take on the role of a scientist or engineer to investigate a realistic problem. These problems provide relevant contexts through which students investigate real-world phenomena that are seamlessly integrated throughout the unit. By positioning students as engineers or scientists, they are actively engaged in designing innovative solutions and making sense of the world around them.

Explore our phenomena

¡El futuro es bilingüe! | The future is bilingual!

Promote biliteracy with Amplify Caminos, a K–5 Spanish language arts curriculum that helps teachers inspire students as they become confident readers, writers, and thinkers in Spanish. The program combines rich content knowledge with systematic foundational skills instruction that is grounded in the Science of Reading and supports multiple teaching models. Para la versión en español, haga clic aquí.

Cultivating biliteracy pathways

Amplify Caminos is designed to support any biliteracy model, including English as a Second Language (ESL), transitional bilingual programs, dual language strands, and Spanish immersion programs. Combined with its English language partner, Amplify Core Knowledge Language Arts (CKLA), Amplify Caminos provides a comprehensive biliteracy solution.

Our approach

Grounded in the Science of Reading and following biliteracy principles, Amplify Caminos combines rich, diverse content knowledge with systematic foundational skills instruction to deliver a research-based biliteracy curriculum

Leveraging the Science of Reading

At the heart of the Science of Reading is the Simple View of Reading, a formula describing how skilled reading requires both language comprehension and word recognition. Amplify Caminos is built on this model, with powerful resources that drive real results.

Developing foundational skills explicitly and systematically

Amplify Caminos instruction is based on how the Spanish language works. Students learn vowel sounds and common sounds before blending them to form syllables and words. Less frequent consonants and other complex elements are presented later, with an intentional progression that sets students up for success.

Building background knowledge drives results

Students dig deeper and make connections across content areas to build a robust knowledge base for comprehending complex texts. Amplify Caminos and Amplify CKLA follow the Core Knowledge Sequence—a content-specific, cumulative, and coherent approach to building knowledge—with parallel topics to support research-based and equitable Tier 1 instruction in Spanish and English.

Explore how Core Knowledge curriculum improves reading scores and eliminates achievement gaps.

Culturally relevant and challenging texts

Students learn about diverse topics and genres while better understanding themselves and the world with a variety of texts. Authentic Spanish literature, including original decodables by Latino and Hispanic authors, and transadapted texts connect knowledge topics and foundational skills instruction to provide a rich learning experience.

Being bilingual is a superpower

Bilingualism is a cognitive strength: Research attributes it to increased attention, improved working memory, greater awareness of language, and more. Honor the unique skills, strengths, and needs of your multilingual learners with Amplify Caminos and Amplify CKLA.

Our approach

Through its engaging digital program, powerful differentiation and assessment tools, and step-by-step instructional guides, our curriculum responds directly to the challenges and opportunities faced by middle school students and teachers.

See the research behind the program.

We empower students to become critical thinkers.

With text always at the center, students are encouraged to make ideas and opinions about meaning for themselves. Rather than focusing on right or wrong answers, they develop ideas and opinions on relevant, real-world, texts.

We provide six levels of differentiated support.

Multiple entry points and six levels of embedded differentiated support allow every student, regardless of fluency or ability level, to engage with the same complex texts and curriculum.

We assess while you instruct.

Embedded assessments and reports provide insight into each student’s progress without having to interrupt daily instruction. With data being collected at every learning moment, teachers can respond to student needs faster than ever before.

Amplify CKLA in Action

Rich, engaging content is at the center of Amplify Core Knowledge Language Arts® (CKLA) curriculum and instruction. Students build subject area knowledge in history, science, literature, and the arts by learning to read and write. High-quality instructional materials built on the Science of Reading simplify your planning and provide the support and resources you need.

Inside the Classroom

Kindergarten

Follow along as a kindergarten class goes through an Amplify CKLA Skills Strand lesson on tricky words. Students review sounds and spellings using Large Letter Cards, engage with Student Readers, and receive explicit instruction from their teacher in both whole- and small-group settings.

Grade 1

In this Amplify CKLA Knowledge Strand lesson, students achieve reading proficiency with complex read-alouds, exposure to background knowledge, vocabulary practice, text-based discussions, and writing activities.

Grade 4

Watch students journey through a Quest for the Core™ in the Amplify CKLA lesson, Eureka! Student Inventor. These fourth-graders work in teams, combining research, writing, and presenting skills to become master inventors.

Our approach

Improve outcomes with a program built on a decade of research, and that meets the strongest ESSA Tier I criteria.

Grounded in the Science of Reading

As the original Science of Reading program, Amplify CKLA puts research into action with explicit, systematic foundational skills instruction and a proven knowledge-building sequence. In collaboration with education experts and practitioners, we provide powerful resources that deliver real results.

Background knowledge drives results

Amplify CKLA follows the Core Knowledge Sequence, a content-specific, cumulative, and coherent approach to knowledge building. This approach improves reading scores and closes achievement gaps by establishing a robust knowledge base that strengthens comprehension.

In Amplify CKLA 3rd Edition, we’ve enriched our Knowledge Sequence with a wider range of perspectives and high-quality texts in new and enhanced units.

Build foundational skills for long-term success.

Students progress from simple to complex skill development starting with phonological and phonemic awareness. Instruction in Grades K–2 explicitly teaches the 150 spellings for the 44 sounds of English, following an intentional progression to ensure student success.

In our 3rd Edition, we’ve added dedicated Grade 3 foundational skills instruction that can either support core lessons or function as an intervention, based on student needs.

Daily writing deepens learning.

Grounded in the Science of Writing—the research on how kids learn to write—instruction is explicit, daily, and woven into the curriculum’s rich content. It covers both transcription (handwriting and spelling) and composition (organizing ideas into narratives) with high-impact activities like sentence-level combining and expanding, and pre-writing exercises. Writing and reading instruction are integrated so students simultaneously strengthen their communication skills, comprehension, and confidence.

High-quality, diverse texts

Amplify CKLA students are immersed in a variety of texts—complex read-alouds, decodable chapter books, trade books, and content-rich readers—that reflect varied experiences and connect to learning goals.

Readers are 100% decodable for Grades K–2, empowering students to directly apply what they’ve learned. Novel Study units for Grades 3–5 offer a mix of contemporary and classic literature, and Culminating Research Units in every grade include a set of authentic texts and trade books.

Reach all learners with differentiated support.

Scaffolds and challenges, developed in collaboration with education experts, make content available to every student—including multilingual and English learners. With strategies embedded right in the curriculum, teachers can deliver in-the-moment, individualized instruction to meet all student needs.
