The one-stop solution for New Jersey’s literacy mandates

New Jersey now requires universal literacy screening and parent notifications. To meet these mandates, NJDOE’s Student Literacy Working Group fully recommends mCLASS DIBELS 8th Edition as the trusted solution to help schools.

Some of the requirements of the New Jersey Department of Education’s Senate Bill 2644 include:

  • Mandatory screenings: Schools must conduct literacy screenings for all K–3 students at least twice annually to assess reading proficiency levels.
  • Parental notification: Within 30 days of the screening period’s end, schools are required to inform parents or guardians of the results, including comparisons to grade-level norms and available intervention supports.

mCLASS offers New Jersey all of the following, plus many more additional features to support students and teachers:

  • Universal screening
  • Dyslexia screening
  • Instant data analysis and reporting
  • Parental notification letter

New research brief: K–2 early literacy improvements offer hope, but persistent challenges remain.

Amplify’s research brief on the latest K–2 middle-of-school-year literacy data reveals encouraging gains in early reading, particularly among the nation’s youngest students. This year’s kindergarten cohort has returned to pre-pandemic literacy readiness levels. But overall progress remains slow: Only 56% of students are on track for learning to read, and 29% of students are far behind.

Middle-of-year data can help schools plan for instructional changes and implement those changes before the following school year. See the report’s recommendations for actions schools and districts can take now.

How many students are on track to learn to read?

While all grades across K–2 show signs of year-over-year progress, with more students on-track for learning to read than there were in 2023–24, broader literacy gains remain slow, with a little more than half of students across early grades (K–2) on track for core reading instruction.

Bar chart showing the percent of kindergarten students far behind: 29%, 47%, 37%, 32%, 30%, and 29% across six groups.

How many students are at risk for not learning to read?

All grades across K–2 show the percentage of students at the greatest risk for not learning to read decreasing year-over-year. While fewer students are considered far behind today than in 2023–24, more than a quarter of students across grades K–2 are at the greatest risk for not learning to read.

Data’s essential role in your Science of Reading implementation

Support teachers and students in working toward literacy goals by leading with data as you shift to the Science of Reading. With tools like ongoing progress monitoring and a robust Multi-Tiered System of Supports, we’ll show you how data can give your students the literacy instruction they deserve.

Building buy-in for change—with data

You can use literacy data to harness buy-in for a paradigm shift, monitor student progress, and support your transition to the Science of Reading. But which data measures best identify areas for growth and reveal the path to student achievement?

Our free ebook, The Story That Data Tells, will help you take the first steps in using data to guide your journey toward impactful change..

“I had to dig into and learn: What is [the Science of Reading] all about? How are we gonna be using this data instructionally, and then take that data and use it with our kids? So that’s really how we got the ball rolling.”

—Corey Beil, Interventionist and Instructional Coach

Quaker Community School District, Pennsylvania

Getting started with a data-driven literacy implementation

As any experienced educator can agree, change is not straightforward in the classroom. This is especially true when it comes to shifting to the Science of Reading, a process that requires meticulous planning, open communication, and—most importantly—data.

Discover which data to focus on throughout the school year, and how to use it to direct your implementation—whether you’re just starting the shift, or already implementing the Science of Reading.

Align your MTSS to the Science of Reading

Learn more about MTSS in literacy principles and how to align it with the Science of Reading.

The five guiding principles for an effective MTSS

To provide your students with literacy instruction that meets their needs, you need seamless planning and plenty of forethought. Deliver the instruction, assessment, and personalized learning your students deserve with a Multi-Tiered System of Supports grounded in data and the Science of Reading.

Read about the five guiding principles that can help you align your MTSS with the Science of Reading in our free ebook Systems of Success: Getting Started With a Multi-Tiered System of Supports Aligned to the Science of Reading.

Review the five guiding principles

An effective MTSS framework requires collaboration from all stakeholders (such as teachers, administrators, and caregivers) to ensure students have access to the right instructional support at the right time.

Frequent collection and interpretation of high-quality data is essential to identifying student needs, monitoring progress, and guiding decision-making. Universal screening and progress monitoring data are used to evaluate the effectiveness of all tiers in an MTSS, and to identify students at risk.

An MTSS provides increasing levels of support for students when they need it. It also focuses on prevention first to reduce the need for intervention later.

Implementing evidence-based instruction and interventions with fidelity improves outcomes for all students. A focus on all students, not just those in need of additional support, ensures that all students can access high-quality instruction.

In an MTSS framework, decisions are based on research and the constantly evolving needs of all students and schools.

Unlock possibility with the Science of Writing

The reality is…writing is hard. It’s hard to learn, it’s hard to teach, it’s hard to do.

Natalie Wexler, author of The Knowledge Gap and The Writing Revolution, says, “Writing is the hardest thing we ask students to do.” Fortunately, we have decades of research that shows us how best to teach and learn how to write, known as the Science of Writing. As an educator your job is to make this hard task easier and more fulfilling for students. And our job is to help you.

Why writing matters: Connection, expression, and better reading comprehension

Without writing, there would be no need for reading, and of course, writing is a part of literacy.

Through writing, students can express their ideas, connect with others, and deepen and communicate their understanding of what they are reading and thinking.

Having strong writing skills ensures students can engage fully in all settings, share their opinions and information, tell stories, and have a voice.

What is the Science of Writing?

Learning to write (and read) isn’t natural but it can be taught—and research shows us how. Like the Science of Reading, the Science of Writing is the collection of research and evidence-based practices that explains how writing develops along with the teaching strategies that help students develop into skilled writers.

Writing proficiency involves mastering the use of a complex set of skills that must be taught explicitly, again just like reading proficiency. The Simple View of Writing breaks down these processes into transcription and composition, and provides us with a framework for guiding instruction.

The relationship between reading and writing

Reading and writing reinforce and support each other. When reading, students are exposed to vocabulary, grammar, and syntax. And when writing, students can get more practice to improve the fluency and efficiency of their handwriting, and apply their knowledge of spelling and their understanding of vocabulary, grammar, and syntax.

Readers use comprehension skills such as summarizing, predicting, and making inferences to help them create meaning as they read. Writers use those same skills to develop a piece of writing that is clear and concise for the reader.

The benefits of applying reading skills and strategies when writing

  • If you teach students decoding skills, then they become better spellers.
  • If students learn strategies for planning, drafting, and revising during composition, then their reading comprehension improves.
  • If students have word and vocabulary knowledge, then they’re better at expressing their ideas in writing.
“Steve Graham and Michael Hebert (2010) carried out a meta-analysis of more than 100 studies in which students wrote about text. They found that writing in various ways about what one had read improved comprehension and learning, and it did so better than reading alone, reading and rereading, or reading and discussing.”

—Tim Shanahan, Ph.D.

Distinguished Professor Emeritus, University of Illinois at Chicago (UIC); Literacy researcher and writer

Oral language and writing

Oral language is the foundation for literacy, and its development begins in infancy. As their oral language develops, children learn how to string words into phrases and sentences, which progresses into telling stories and answering questions in detail. And as they listen to stories, children develop vocabulary and understanding of syntax and grammar. All of these build a foundation for writing.

Program overview

Amplify CKLA is a core ELA program for Grades K–5 that delivers:

  • A unique research-based approach truly built on the Science of Reading.
  • A combination of explicit foundational skills with meaningful knowledge building.
  • Embedded support and differentiation that gets all students reading grade-level texts together.
  • Opportunities for students to see the strengths and experiences that all people share while also celebrating each others’ unique identities and experiences.
  • Authentic Spanish language arts instruction with Amplify Caminos.

How it works

Amplify CKLA teaches both foundational skills and background knowledge in Grades K–2 and combines them in Grades 3–5, in alignment with the Science of Reading.

  • In grades K–2, students complete one full lesson that builds foundational reading skills, as well as one full lesson that builds background knowledge.
  • In grades 3–5, students complete one integrated lesson that combines skills and knowledge with increasingly complex texts, close reading, and a greater writing emphasis.

Rich topics

Amplify CKLA builds knowledge coherently across subjects and grades.

Students make connections from year to year by exploring grade-appropriate subject-area knowledge and vocabulary in history, science, literature, and the arts, while learning to read, write, and think creatively and for themselves.

Science of Reading resources

Watching students learn to read? Magic. Knowing how they get there? Science.

As you consider your next core ELA program, it’s critically important to understand what the Science of Reading really means—and what it tells us what it tells us about how to teach more effectively. Unlike other programs, Amplify CKLA was built upon these insights and practices, making it easier for teachers to implement this proven approach.

#1 most adopted California NGSS curriculum

Amplify Science California is a brand-new TK–8 curriculum built for the California NGSS. It also happens to be the most adopted science curriculum so far—out of 17 state-approved programs to choose from. We feel pretty honored to be the science curriculum partner of choice for so many districts. Find out what makes our program so phenomenal by exploring this site at your own pace.

Overview

With Amplify Science California, students don’t just passively learn about science concepts. Instead, they take on the role of scientists and engineers to actively investigate and figure out real-world phenomena.  They do this through a blend of cohesive and compelling storylines, hands-on investigations, collaborative discussions, literacy-rich activities, and interactive digital tools.

Listen to these educators share how the program empowers students to think, read, write, and argue like real scientists and engineers every day.

Grades K–5

Grades 6–8

Our approach

At the heart of Amplify Science California is our goal of helping students make the shift from learning about to figuring out scientific concepts. As they collect evidence, students actively work to construct a deeper and more complex understanding of each unit’s anchor phenomenon.

Throughout the Amplify Science California curriculum, students actively share and discuss evidence and work together to determine what claim the evidence supports. As they collaborate and engage in debate, they are practicing vital aspects of constructing explanations and argumentation, such as:

  • Deeply understanding evidence
  • Working with others to understand the meaning of evidence
  • Convincing others that their claim is the most sound
  • Providing logical reasoning to support their claims

Why choose Amplify Science California?

Amplify Science California isn’t a traditional textbook program. Rather, it’s a next-generation curriculum designed to support a shift to a whole new way of teaching science. If your district is interested in making a successful and lasting transition to the California NGSS, Amplify Science California is a program that you can choose with confidence.

Newly built for the California NGSS

Unlike other companies that retrofitted an existing program, we built Amplify Science California from the ground up. That means that every unit, every chapter, every lesson, and every activity was newly crafted to deliver true three-dimensional learning that works. Said another way, our program didn’t exist until after the California NGSS Framework was complete.

Authored by California’s leading science education experts

Amplify Science California was developed by the science education experts at UC Berkeley’s Lawrence Hall of Science and the digital learning team at Amplify. As the Hall’s first curriculum designed to address the California NGSS, Amplify Science California reflects state-of-the-art practices in science teaching and learning.

Proven effective (for ELs, too!)

Grounded in research, proven effective, and classroom-tested—Amplify Science California was designed to work, and it does. Simply put: Students who use our science curriculum outperform their peers. That’s because our instructional design is rooted in UC Berkeley’s Do, Talk, Read, Write, Visualize approach, which has been backed by three gold-standard studies, efficacy research, and extensive field testing.

What’s more, learners who used this approach outperformed their English Learner peers in literacy skills and science content knowledge. Just check out the results to the left!

Easier lesson delivery with our new hands-free TG

With our new Classroom Slides, you can put down the Teacher’s Guide and focus on what matters most—your students. These lesson-specific PowerPoints make delivering daily instruction a snap with embedded links to related resources and suggested teacher talk in the Notes section of each slide. Classroom Slides are now available for Grades K-5 and will be ready for Grades 6-8 for the 2020-2021 school year!

Student resources in the format you choose

With more flexible implementation options at Grades 6-8, Amplify Science California suits every budget. Districts can now mix and match the following components to create their preferred student experience:

  • A new hardcover Student Edition
  • A new 2-volume consumable Student Investigation Notebook Set
  • Our current 9-volume consumable Student Investigation Notebook Set
  • Our digital student experience for reading articles and completing classwork

Built with affordability and manageability in mind

Amplify Science California helps your dollars stretch farther with more materials than any other program. Our K–5 kits support up to 36 students at a time, and include enough materials for a total of 72 student uses. Our 6–8 kits support up to 40 students at a time and include enough materials for a total of 200 student uses. What’s more, only 7 of the 27 units at this level require refills. For many California NGSS classrooms, that can equate to two years of use per grade level.

More materials also means more manageable and effective small-group instruction. Unlike other programs that require students to work in large groups of 8-9 students each, we give you enough materials to support up to 8 small groups of 4-5 students each.

No more waiting for new features

Other publishers require you to wait for program updates until the next revision—even if it’s six years away. That’s not the case with Amplify Science California. We’re committed to supporting your continued success with the California NGSS for the duration of your adoption period, which includes making digital updates and platform enhancements available to you in real time through our platform.

What educators say

“I just wanted to let you know that I am LOVING teaching this Natural Selection unit. This simulation is UNBELIEVABLE! We are on day 4 and the kids are loving it. One of my ADD kiddos even came in—during break time—to set up a scenario where he made the Ostralopes super hairy and then made it warm to see how they adapt! The slow, meaningful build of the concepts is SO awesome. I showed my principal and our instructional technology director what we were doing today, and they were blown away. Thank you!”

Nuestro enfoque

For English version, please click here.

“Amplify CKLA Skills helped us have systematic phonics so that we could make sure we were doing the direct teaching that our students needed. We’re seeing that, over time, we don’t have to fill in those gaps because they’re not actually created in the first place.”

Heidi, Academic Director, Exceed Charter School

Our approach

Starting with sounds, students practice their phonemic awareness, handwriting skills, vocabulary, spelling, and grammar. They become aware of the connection between reading and writing, building confidence along the way.

Explicit, systematic instruction that works for students and teachers

Amplify CKLA Skills’ research-based scope and sequence progresses from simple to more complex skill development, starting with phonological and phonemic awareness. Instruction guides you in explicitly teaching the 150 spellings for the 44 sounds of English, with an intentional progression and review of skills to set your students up for success.

Daily 60-minute lessons cover all skills standards.

Instruction includes print and phonological awareness, sound-letter patterns, decoding and encoding, writing mechanics, and writing structure and processes. Ready-made presentation slides help you effectively deliver each lesson.

Decodable readers help students crack the code.

Amplify CKLA readers are 100 percent decodable, which means they include only words with letter-sound correspondences that have been explicitly taught. The readers are colorful fiction and nonfiction chapter books that kids love! In Grades K–1, visual supports such as underlined and bolded text scaffold students, while Big Book versions may be used for teacher modeling. Readers are also available as audio-enhanced e-books.

Immerse your students in close reading.

Middle school students are learning to immerse themselves in text—and learning to articulate what resonates and matters to them in what they read. Boost Close Reading is an immersive supplemental reading program that engages students through an interactive graphic novel. With high-interest storytelling and guided instruction, the program motivates middle schoolers to question what they read, think critically, and build the close reading skills that will ensure success in high school and beyond.

In this future, reading is adventure.

Each student’s journey through this action-packed world depends on their ability to read literary and informational texts critically. Boost Close Reading develops a deep understanding of essential middle school skills—such as identifying the parts of a valid argument—that will prepare them for success in high school and in the broader world.

And every student can be the hero.

Every chapter provides integrated instruction, guided close reading, and a creative application. You set the difficulty level for each student. Assign English Learners and struggling readers to the Extra Support path. When they’re ready, switch them back to the Core Path.

An authentic Spanish assessment built specifically for bilingual students learning to read

Part of the mCLASS® Español suite, mCLASS Lectura is a universal screener for K–6 built on modern Spanish literacy research. It helps educators accelerate reading growth for Spanish-speaking students by delivering complete parity between English and Spanish reading assessments. Para la versión en español, haga clic aquí.

Addressing the classroom inequities Spanish-speaking students face in early literacy

Spanish-speaking students have been underserved and misclassified for decades. By combining mCLASS Lectura and mCLASS® DIBELS® 8th Edition, you’ll be able to understand where your Spanish-speaking students are in their English and Spanish literacy paths.

Based on the science behind how students learn to read in English and Spanish, the mCLASS system allows teachers to connect with their Spanish-speaking students face-to-face, one-on-one, and in the language most comfortable to them. Teachers are able to pinpoint where their Spanish-speaking or emergent bilingual students really are in their literacy skill development and what instruction to prioritize.

What experts say

“It’s incredibly important we attend to the Spanish language alongside English in assessment practices, to make sure we’re not underestimating the ability of a really significant percentage of our nation’s school population.”

–Dr. Lillian Durán

Co-developer of mCLASS Lectura, Ph.D., Associate Dean for Academic Affairs, College of Education, University of Oregon

Built by leading biliteracy experts

The mCLASS® Lectura universal screener was co-developed with the Center on Teaching and Learning at the University of Oregon. The assessment was validated by Amplify in partnership with Dr. Lillian Durán of the University of Oregon.

The development of mCLASS Lectura also involved a team of nationally recognized experts representing a range of regions (Mexico, Central America, South America, and the Caribbean), along with focus groups featuring classroom teachers, special education teachers, specialists, and administrators.

Our approach

Aligned to the Science of Reading, mCLASS Lectura allows teachers to connect with their students through observational assessment and in the language most comfortable to them. We built mCLASS Lectura so that when used in tandem with mCLASS DIBELS 8th Edition, educators can achieve complete parity between English and Spanish literacy skills.

Complete parity between English and Spanish

mCLASS Lectura is an authentic Spanish assessment that delivers complete parity when combined with mCLASS DIBELS 8th Edition, including parallel reporting across English and Spanish assessments and unique dual-language reporting.

Listen to your students read in both languages, one-on-one

mCLASS Lectura provides teacher-administered assessments in Spanish that deliver accurate and reliable measurements of each student’s literacy progress.

Built from the latest research in Spanish literacy development

mCLASS Lectura is a high-quality assessment that accounts for the major differences between English and Spanish, not simply a direct translation or transadaptation between the two languages.

Transfer skills in one language to the other

By providing teachers with insights into the skill areas in which their students are proficient, in their native language, the program helps Spanish-speakers build on their strengths and make connections to their second language. Educators also receive guidance on the cross-linguistic transfer of critical skills in both languages.

Developed with experts

Boost Lectura’s Spanish literacy curriculum was developed in partnership with Spanish literacy experts and educators from several Spanish-speaking regions who contributed valuable perspectives for the creation of authentic and relevant content.

Our approach

Students learning to read in Spanish deserve authentic, research-based instruction. Boost Lectura accomplishes this and complements Amplify’s comprehensive biliteracy assessment and curriculum programs. When used with Boost Reading, it’s the first personalized learning solution built on the Science of Reading for Spanish and English biliteracy development.

Authentic Spanish literacy instruction

Boost Lectura focuses on the foundational skills that research indicates are not only critical for learning to read in Spanish, such as phonological awareness, letter-sound correspondences, decoding, and comprehension, but that are also transferable from Spanish to English. The program was built with expert guidance and research on how bilingual literacy (particularly Spanish and English biliteracy) develops.

Ideal for any classroom model

Without having to be proficient in Spanish, teachers have access to an evidence-based Spanish literacy scope and sequence with learning content targeted to individual student needs. Boost Lectura can be leveraged in any literacy learning model.

Spanish and English parity

Boost Lectura can be seamlessly paired with Boost Reading. When used together, the two programs build reading proficiency in both English and Spanish for students in grades K–2, as well as provide teachers with data insights on students’ skills progression in each language.

Comprehensive biliteracy suite

Boost Lectura integrates with Amplify’s full suite of biliteracy programs, including Amplify Caminos and mCLASS® Lectura. Through aligned instruction, these tools and materials provide educators with everything they need to screen, instruct, and provide practice in Spanish literacy.

Get struggling K–6 readers on track with our reading intervention program.

mCLASS® Intervention is a staff-led reading intervention that does the heavy lifting of data analysis and lesson sequencing, freeing up teachers to teach the reading skills each student needs.

  • Una mujer señala una página de un libro mientras una joven observa. Están sentados en una mesa en un salón de clases con carteles educativos en la pared detrás de ellos.
  • A teacher with glasses sits at a table with five students, aiding them in writing exercises as part of mCLASS Intervention. A pink laptop is open on the table, while educational posters adorn the classroom walls.

About mCLASS Intervention

Getting students caught up on reading skills requires more than just “extra help” in small groups. It requires teaching that directly targets the specific skills each group needs to learn next. How does mCLASS Intervention help? It does the heavy lifting of data analysis and lesson generation.

What educators say

“Because mCLASS Intervention is so targeted, we’ve seen student performance improve much faster than we used to. It also increased the efficiency and effectiveness of our teachers.”

Bree Lessar

Superintendent, La Veta School District, Colorado

What educators say

“I am so grateful for mCLASS Intervention and the Amplify team! Using these programs assisted us with helping our struggling readers. My school obtained a FIVE Star rating by the State Department of Education (the highest rating in our state) due to our student growth last year.”

Reading Specialist, Nevada

Research-based, classroom-tested

K–2 students in mCLASS® Intervention grew by up to 8 student growth percentile points more in early literacy skills than similar peers not enrolled in mCLASS Intervention, according to a study by the Institute of Education Sciences (IES).

Our approach

mCLASS® Intervention follows a research-based skills progression and uses software to analyze results, form small groups, build engaging lessons for each group, and update skill profiles and groups every 10 days.

Measure skills

Every 10 days, educators progress-monitor students on the skills they’re working to build. mCLASS Intervention analyzes these results, updates students’ placement on the learning progression, and identifies what they should focus on next.

Group students

Once each student’s profile is updated, mCLASS® Intervention analyzes the results of other students and arranges students by skill into small groups of 4–6.

Generate lessons

Once groups are formed, mCLASS® Intervention determines the ideal focus for each group and automatically prepares two weeks of targeted lessons. See a sample here.

Teach students

Staff then deliver the lessons to the small group of students—either with the interventionist coming into the room or the students going to a different room.

What’s included

mCLASS Intervention covers the five big ideas of reading: phonological awareness, phonics, fluency, vocabulary, and comprehension. The program comes with a mix of print and digital components to help you serve students.

Targeted lesson plans

mCLASS Intervention provides a bank of more than 4,000 research-backed activities, including multisensory activities that use auditory, visual, tactile, and kinesthetic techniques.

Lesson builder

The lesson builder automatically assembles activities into detailed lessons that target the skills each group is ready to learn.

Easy-to-use lesson materials

mCLASS Intervention provides both print kit materials and a digital card app to help you streamline lesson preparation.

Practice app

The practice app allows students to continue to improve their automaticity in decoding with engaging games.

Progress monitoring

Standardized diagnostic probes allow educators to closely monitor progress.

Educator and administrator reports

An adult and a child wearing blue headphones joyfully high-five each other at a table with a laptop, celebrating their success with an engaging tutoring program.

What is Amplify Tutoring?

We partner with you to customize high-impact, research-based solutions to support your students and extend the reach of your teachers.

With built-in progress monitoring and reporting, Amplify Tutoring uses data to meet students where they are and equip educators with insights they need. Instruction is personalized and engaging, delivered by a consistent adult, and grounded in a motivating relationship. Comprehensive and easy to use, our materials enable a range of staff—certified educators, paraprofessionals, community members, or college students—to deliver effective, tailored instruction.

Amplify Tutoring uses high-quality, ESSA-rated materials rooted in the Science of Reading and trusted data from the mCLASS® DIBELS® assessment. Our lessons include explicit and systematic instruction, build knowledge, and teach the essential word recognition and comprehension skills readers need to achieve proficiency.

Our program is based on the research behind effective high-impact literacy tutoring. It can be implemented in person or virtually across entire districts, schools, or grade levels and is:

  • Customizable to meet schools’ unique needs and complement their Multi-Tiered System of Supports (MTSS).
  • Supportive of any staffing models. We can support your staff with program management and coaching and support, provide tutoring staff for you, or co-design a blended model to meet your distinct needs.
  • Year-long or semester-long. Programs are flexible and scheduled so as not to interfere with core instruction or special classes.

Students meet frequently and consistently for 30-minute sessions at least three times per week with a dedicated, caring tutor. Our research-based, data-driven tutoring materials are designed to make learning interactive and fun, helping students quickly advance their reading skills alongside their peers. Sessions can be led by your staff, by partnering with Amplify’s tutors, or by blending both models.

With cutting-edge technology and a team of passionate specialists, we partner with schools and districts to easily scale and enhance their high-impact tutoring and MTSS efforts. Our services ensure a smooth implementation and include program management, scheduling, and data reporting supports. We offer ongoing professional development and coaching for all stakeholders, from educators to caregivers. We can also provide trained, skilled tutors who deliver engaging lessons and build strong, meaningful connections with students.

We provide six levels of differentiated support.

Multiple entry points and six levels of embedded differentiated support allow every student, regardless of fluency or ability level, to engage with the same complex texts and curriculum.

We assess while you instruct.

Embedded assessments and reports provide insight into each student’s progress without having to interrupt daily instruction. With data being collected at every learning moment, teachers can respond to student needs faster than ever before.

Grounded in the Science of Reading

As the original Science of Reading program, Amplify CKLA puts research into action with explicit, systematic foundational skills instruction and a proven knowledge-building sequence. In collaboration with education experts and practitioners, we provide powerful resources that deliver real results.

Background knowledge drives results

Amplify CKLA follows the Core Knowledge Sequence, a content-specific, cumulative, and coherent approach to knowledge building. This approach improves reading scores and closes achievement gaps by establishing a robust knowledge base that strengthens comprehension.

In Amplify CKLA 3rd Edition, we’ve enriched our Knowledge Sequence with a wider range of perspectives and high-quality texts in new and enhanced units.

Build foundational skills for long-term success.

Students progress from simple to complex skill development starting with phonological and phonemic awareness. Instruction in Grades K–2 explicitly teaches the 150 spellings for the 44 sounds of English, following an intentional progression to ensure student success.

In our 3rd Edition, we’ve added dedicated Grade 3 foundational skills instruction that can either support core lessons or function as an intervention, based on student needs.

Daily writing deepens learning.

Grounded in the Science of Writing—the research on how kids learn to write—instruction is explicit, daily, and woven into the curriculum’s rich content. It covers both transcription (handwriting and spelling) and composition (organizing ideas into narratives) with high-impact activities like sentence-level combining and expanding, and pre-writing exercises. Writing and reading instruction are integrated so students simultaneously strengthen their communication skills, comprehension, and confidence.

High-quality, diverse texts

Amplify CKLA students are immersed in a variety of texts—complex read-alouds, decodable chapter books, trade books, and content-rich readers—that reflect varied experiences and connect to learning goals.

Readers are 100% decodable for Grades K–2, empowering students to directly apply what they’ve learned. Novel Study units for Grades 3–5 offer a mix of contemporary and classic literature, and Culminating Research Units in every grade include a set of authentic texts and trade books.

Reach all learners with differentiated support.

Scaffolds and challenges, developed in collaboration with education experts, make content available to every student—including multilingual and English learners. With strategies embedded right in the curriculum, teachers can deliver in-the-moment, individualized instruction to meet all student needs.
